Diploma of Excellence Awarded by Eco Schools

The Nobel International School Algarve received the Diploma of Excellence in January, awarded at the National Seminar of the Eco-Schools Programme.  The Algarve is the region with the least number of educational establishments in the National Network of Eco-Schools and Nobel Algarve is leading the way in change.

Eco School Programme Co-ordinators at Nobel Algarve, Nuno Rodrigues and Sara Soares, said: “It is a pride to be an Eco-School and the only one in the region distinguished with the award of excellence in implementing the most important environmental education program in the world. We were thrilled to receive this honour and recognition of the hard work that is taking place here to make our school as ecologically friendly as possible. We have an active Eco Warriors group which the students belong to, and we are currently planning some exciting big changes to the way we manage single use plastic at the school. In the near future, children can also expect to be able to take part in activities to maintain a new, larger vegetable garden.”

The environmental delegates were present at the National Seminar of the Eco-schools program, held in Lagoa last January, to represent their classes and, in this meeting, which is held annually, the students were able to deepen their knowledge on sustainable development and to learn sustainability-promoting methodologies and strategies carried out in other schools.  The programme encourages schools to share good practice and to lead the way in inspiring the next generation to act responsibly with regard to looking after the planet.

The Eco-Schools programme consists of three structural elements – The Seven Steps Framework, the Eco-Schools Themes,  and Assessment for the Green Flag. To be successful, the programme requires support from school leaders and the Board. Active involvement of staff is imperative as well as long-term commitment and the willingness to involve students in decision-making.  Eco-Schools instills in students a sense of responsibility and cultivates a sustainable mindset which they can apply on a daily basis. It equips those involved with the drive to really make a difference and to spread such proactive behaviour amongst family and friends, ultimately passing it on to future generations.
